Commercializing CO2 utilization technologies with Sancon

Back in 2015, the NRG Carbon XPRIZE was launched as a $20 million prize and one of the winners, one of the winners secured $10 million with its proposal of expanding its commercialization of CO2 utilization technology for the global concrete industry.

With this funding, an initial pilot project was launched with partners including InnoTech Alberta, and COSIA (Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance), an alliance of 13 oil sands producers, representing 90 percent of production from the Canadian oil sands. The project was piloted in at a Calgary based facility, Alberta Carbon Conversion Technology Centre, with Sancon assigned as commissioning and operational support. During this pilot project, Sancon provided them a project manager on-site to support the daily operations and start-up of this facility.

Thanks to this partnership, Sancon developed a close relationship with the organization who introduced our organization to a new technology in the carbon capture space. Sancon was able to navigate the complexity of working with public energy company, existing facility and working with an Alberta energy association to achieve better project outcomes.

Since the completion of this project, Sancon has solidified itself as a leader in emerging technologies in the carbon capture space both in Alberta and globally.

Sancon invests in renewable energy training

This past winter, Sancon enrolled its entire electrical department in the Solar Alberta’s commissioning training course to aid in providing out clients the latest solutions in future renewable projects.

“With the province’s continued investment and expansion to diversify Alberta’s energy sector to include renewables such as solar power, Sancon made an effort to join the natural evolution of the industry and invest in educating our employees,” stated Heinz Inabnit, Chief Development Officer.

Sancon is defining itself as a leader in all forms of energy including green. With upcoming projects such as the 3,300 acres solar farm in Lomond, Alberta called the Traver Solar Project, Sancon understands the importance of having highly trained employees to work on projects of this size and scope.

“With our employees existing experience and technical background, the additional investment on training them in solar was an easy decision for our operations team,” said Jonathan Evans, Chief Operations Officer. “We want our electrical department to be seen as experts and provide our clients solutions to their upcoming solar farm projects.”

The course completed by Sancon’s electrical department including topics such as grid-interactive Solar PV Systems Commissioning, project specific standards and specifications, performance tests, testing and troubleshooting procedures as well was recording and interpreting test data.

Better Future Outcomes

With 2021 wrapping up and the holiday season upon us, our team is reflecting on the importance of giving back. The past two years have been challenging to say the least, but helping others in our community is a fundamental value for Sancon.

Last year, our leadership team took the time to get feedback from our most important stakeholders, our staff, on what charities they support and align with.  After engaging our staff and looking further into each organization that was proposed, Sancon decided to make Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary and area (BBBS) its charity of choice.

If you don’t know about BBBS, they match young people facing adversity with trained adult mentors in 1-1 or group mentoring programs. These programs give young people the support, skills and growth to have better outcomes in their future.

Sancon understands investing in the future. We continually provide mentorship opportunities by pairing our more experienced technicians and leads with our younger boots on the ground staff to aid in their development, confidence and growth.

This past year Sancon helped low income Calgarians get access to the digital world by dropping off twelve laptops and desktop computers to BBBS and the Calgary Drop-In Centre over the summer.  You can read more about it here.

Then, this fall, Sancon sponsored BBBS’ Big Brunch and helped raise more than $90,000 for its programming and services. It was a great day to learn about the benefits of mentorship right in our own community after hearing from a mentorship pair about their experience.

Sancon will continue to support our community builders including BBBS with more future events and fundraising activities and to get our own staff involved in the program to become “Bigs”. Sancon envisions a corporate culture that is engaged, collaborative and diverse thanks to these opportunities to partner with organizations like BBBS.

Team Sancon’s newest addition

This past fall, Sancon Commissioning Company (Sancon) expanded south of the boarder to Denver, Colorado and opened a new arm of its premier full-service commissioning and start-up specialist enterprise. With this expansion, a new leader, Don Mercier was added to our robust business development team.

Don’s extensive experience in the energy industry and prowess on pipeline and facility construction has been a great addition to the Sancon team. Thanks to Don’s education, Bachelor of Science in Business and Economics, University of Denver, many clients will note his analytical approach to business dealings while promoting cost-effective strategies to the commissioning process.

“Energy commissioning is a challenging and niche arena with multiple disciplines working together. I am constantly looking for ways to promote plan your work, work your plan to clients, and working with a turn-key operation like Sancon can achieve that mantra,” said Don Mercier.

When Don isn’t in the office or meeting with clients, he can be found in the mountains skiing or playing a round of golf with his three adult children.

Sancon Commissioning helps connect low-income Calgarians in a digital world

With the growing need to be online for education and work due to the pandemic, Sancon saw a need to help bridge the gap to get online access to all Calgarians.

In August, Sancon’s Chief Operations Officer, Jonathan Evans dropped off twelve laptop and desktop computers to the Calgary Drop-In Centre, as well as five laptops to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary to help low-income Calgarians. These computers will be used to help families and individuals access their education, jobs and resources online to help address the continuing demand for online accessibility for those less fortunate.

“Working collaboratively with our community partners including the Calgary Drop-in Centre and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary, allows Sancon to deliver on its mantra of ‘Better Community Outcomes’.”

Jonathan Evans, Chief Operations Officer
